(AP) ? Roger Clemens' former catcher with the Toronto Blue Jays testified Wednesday that he had seen vitamin B12 "shots lined up ready to go" for players, a claim also made by Clemens and for which he was charged with obstructing Congress.

Clemens is charged with obstruction of Congress, perjury and making false statements for denying to Congress in 2008 that he ever used steroids or human growth hormone. The obstruction count contains 13 allegedly false statements, including Clemens' assertion in his congressional deposition that "four or five needles" of vitamin B12 would be "already lined up ready to go" in the trainers' room after games. The government maintains that Clemens concocted the B12 account as a cover for steroid injections.

During the trial, prosecutors have asked several government witnesses associated with major league teams whether they've ever seen B12 shots lined up, and all of them have said no. But on Thursday, the first full day of defense witnesses, former catcher Charlie O'Brien replied "yes sir" when defense lawyer Rusty Hardin posed that question.

O'Brien, who played with Clemens in 1997, also testified that the secret to the pitcher's longevity was a split-fingered fastball. That was testimony designed to counter the government

Like other defense witnesses, the former catcher also praised Clemens

Boston's assistant general manager at the time, Steven August, testified he recommended that the team re-sign Clemens.

"I told Mr. Duquette that Roger was at the top of his game," August said. But in fact, Clemens had gone only 40-39 in his last four seasons with Boston, and had mediocre earned run averages over 4.00 in two of those years. His career turned around when he joined the Blue Jays. August, who said he was good friends with Clemens, called the pitcher "extremely hard working," and said that younger players couldn't keep up with him during runs. He said that Clemens was in the top echelon of pitchers.

On cross examination, prosecutor Gil Guerrero told August, "You understand he's not on trial for how great" a baseball player he was, perhaps out of exasperation of all of the testimonials that Clemens was receiving.

The defense began its case Tuesday with one of Clemens' former high school teammates in Texas. Todd Howey said he and his friends would see Clemens jogging on Friday nights while they were out "looking for trouble." Clemens did so many runs in the outfield that he dug a trail that looked like it had been carved by a cow in a pasture, the witness testified.

"I've yet to see anybody work like Roger Clemens," Howey said. Despite the dedication, Clemens was not an exceptional pitcher back then, he said, reaching only 83-84 mph on his fastball. But when Howey played against him in college ? Howey for Texas Tech and Clemens for the University of Texas ? Clemens was throwing a lot harder.

"He proved us all wrong," Howey said, who talked so fast he had to be slowed down by the court reporter and Clemens lawyer Hardin. "You

Mike Capel, a former major league pitcher and longtime friend of Clemens, had played against him in high school and was a teammate in college. He made a similar observation about Clemens' transformation in college into a harder throwing, more athletic and trimmed down pitcher compared with high school. He said Clemens had a "very, very, very good" work ethic.

Capel said Clemens made a point of taking care of his body. During cross-examination Wednesday, Guerrero asked Capel if in coming to that conclusion, he took into consideration some substances that Clemens has admitted taking. The pitcher has said that he took the stimulant ephedra, before it was banned by Major League Baseball, and that he used to eat "Vioxx like it was Skittles." Vioxx, an arthritis medication, was withdrawn from the market in 2004 because a clinical trial revealed increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Capel said he didn't know what Vioxx was, and that he did not take Clemens' use of ephedra into account in his previous comment. Prosecutors tried to exclude the glowing testimony on grounds that seven government witnesses already testified during cross-examination how hard Clemens worked. They wrote in a filing late Monday that it invited jurors to infer that because Clemens didn't use performance-enhancing drugs early on, he must not have later in his career.

Prosecutors argued that if the testimony were to be allowed, the judge should let them rebut it with evidence from other players who also worked hard but still used steroids or HGH.

But U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton ruled against them on both counts.

"Athletes who are hard workers tend to last longer and perform better," said Walton, a former athlete himself who went to college on a football scholarship.

Question by : Facing IRS audit. Can I use a tax debt relief company?
I am being audited that will result in more taxes, penalties, fees, and interest. Am I able to use a debt relief company during the audit?

Best answer:

Answer by Melinda
Tax relief firms usually deal with clients only AFTER the audit is done. You could hire a tax attorney or CPA to help you during the audit, but if you know you cannot avoid the new taxes owed after the audit it is best to save your money until after the debt assessment.

"He is in love with the Church and adores the Pope": The confessor of the Pope's accused valet, Paolo Gabriele, springs to his defense...

Paolo Gabriele, 46

Paolo Gabriele, 46

Andrea Tornielli
vatican city

The voice of the elderly priest - who wished to remain anonymous - sounded broken from all the crying, as he spoke to Italian newspaper La Stampa, from his home in the Vatican. During the telephone interview he described what he knew about Benedict XVI?s 46 year old butler, Paolo Gabriele, husband and father of three, who was arrested after he was found in ?illegal possession of confidential documents.? Like many in the Holy See, the monsignor is scared and still in shock after yesterday?s events.

?

?I have known Paolo for many years; - he confided ? if the accusations against him prove to be true, there will be no one left to trust any more. I still remember when, some years back, he used to arrive at the Secretariat of State?s offices with his black apron, to clean the floors.?

The prelate recounted how at one time he had been the confessor of this man who eventually left his clearing apron behind, replacing it with an immaculate black suit as he went on to become the papal butler, the lay person closet to the Pope, the man who serves the Pope at his table every day. ?I was his confessor at one time and I can say in all faith that the impression he has always given me is that of a man who is in love with the Church and deeply devoted to the Pope, first to John Paul II and now to Benedict XVI,? he added. The person who helped the young ?Paoletto? to enter to serve in the Vatican is the rector of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Sassia, just a stone throw away from Via della Conciliazione and St. Peter?s Square. The Church is dedicated to the worship of the Divine Mercy of St. Faustina Kowalska and is very dear to the Poles.?

?I find what is going on incomprehensible - the monsignor went on to say ? because Paolo was thought very highly of in the Vatican. I have never heard anyone speak ill of him or spread any rumours about him: and believe me this is rare, because unfortunately ours is a world where nasty things are often said and heard.? The monsignor also shared an important piece of information on the alleged poison pen letter writer who was arrested this morning by the papal Gendarmerie, led by General Domenico Giani. ?Paolo always listened to those who wanted to speak with him; he was always kind and smiley with everyone. He never backed away when someone needed his help, when someone needed his support, and I know this from personal experience.? So many of the Vatican?s lay employees confided in him.

But even thought he monsignor fears that the Pope?s butler will end up being used as a scapegoat, he cannot say that the arrest was made lightly - Fr. Lombardi said - because Paolo Gabriele was found in possession of confidential documents. ?Knowing how simple and na?ve he is, he does not strike me as the kind of person who would be capable of planning such an operation, unless he has a schizophrenic personality. And why would he do such a thing anyway?? A good question indeed and one that is on everyone?s lips in the Holy See. ?We must recall that he is married, has three children and a beautiful family. He came to live in the Vatican about a year ago and spends his free time with his children, helping them with their homework. I cannot imagine what motive he would have to throw all the good things and the life he had built down the drain, betraying the Pope?s trust committing an offense as serious as leaking the documents published in [Italian journalist] Nuzzi?s book. I simply cannot believe it and I hope that he manages to prove his innocence. I remember how devoted he was to the Virgin Mary and how faithful he was to the Eucharist.?

The prelate remained silent for a long while, as if he wanted to chase away a thought that had suddenly entered his mind. ?I remember that after gaining the trust of so many in the Vatican, he ended up coming head to head with someone very powerful here?? Suspicions, resentments and above all, so many unanswered questions.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: Metzger helps keep Dirtbags alive

LBSU's first Blair Field homer since 2010 forces winner-take-all finale.

Click photo to enlarge

LBSU's Brennan Metzger celebrates as he crosses home plate after hitting a three-run homer for the Dirtbags in the third inning. It was the first home run by a Long Beach State player at Blair Field since 2010.

The wind was brisk, the game was fast and the Long Beach State team meeting in center field after the game was the quickest of the season.

"There wasn't a whole lot to say," Long Beach State head coach Troy Buckley, a huge smile on his face, said.

The Dirtbags (28-26, 15-8 Big West) beat Cal State Fullerton (34-19, 16-7) Saturday night 5-1 before 2,412 at Blair Field to make today's series and regular-season finale a classic winner-take-all situation for the Dirtbags.

Win and the Dirtbags punch a ticket to the postseason. They would share the title with Fullerton and possibly Cal Poly but win all tiebreakers that would get them to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008.

Brennan Metzger slugged a three-run home run in the third, the first Dirtbag home run at home in two seasons, and Ryan Strufing pitched the best game of his career, allowing two hits through eight innings before tiring and losing his shutout in the ninth.

Leading 1-0 after a RBI single by Juan Avila, Metzger exploded the inning with his two-out, three-run home run to left field off starter Grahamm Wiest.

It was the first home run by a Dirtbag at Blair Field in two seasons using the new BBCOR era of power-deprived bats. The previous homer was on May 9, 2010, when Metzger (fourth inning), Kirk Singer (fifth) and Jonathan Jones (eighth) all went deep in a win over Stanford.

"He gave me a fastball up, which is what I was looking for,"

Metzger said after his second homer of the season and sixth of his career. "It felt good after missing everything they threw at me Friday. I thought it had a chance but I kept my head down until I saw (the umpire) signal home run."

"That was a big blow," Buckley said. "It gave us some space."

Strufing didn't need much. He was in control from the beginning with a hard fastball down in the zone that had the Titans hitting the ball into the ground more often than not. Strufing got 12 outs via a ground ball, struck out six and picked a runner off. He allowed just two hits and two walks through eight innings.

Buckley shook his hand after the eighth to indicate he was going to the bullpen for the ninth. "I politely refused," Strufing said. "I really wanted to finish the game with all of the drama and the crowd."

He was nicked for an error and two hits and left with two outs for Kyle Friedrichs, who struck out J.D. Davis on three pitches."

"He was phenomenal," Buckley said of Strufing. "The setting, with our backs to the wall, with a big crowd ... he had a great fastball today. He had the angle where all they could do was hit the top half of the ball. He pounded the strike zone and didn't back off even when he went 2-0."

Weist walked Kellen Hoime in the third and Johnny Bekakis bunted the Dirtbag catcher to second. After Matt Duffy lined out, Ino Patron's infield single put runners on the corners.

Juan Avila drilled a double to the left field gap to make it 1-0, and Metzger followed with his crushing three-run shot. Avila added an insurance run in the fifth with a two-out run-scoring double, the second of his three hits.

Today at 1 p.m., Shawn Stuart (7-0, 2.21) faces Fullerton left-hander Kenny Mathews (5-2, 4.09). Stuart, the ace of the staff, was moved to the final game of weekend series earlier this season after missing a start, and he's become the Dirtbags' Sunday or last-game talisman.

In his last eight starts, the Dirtbags are 7-1 and Stuart is 6-0. Four times, he's won the final game to clinch a 2-1 series win. Twice, he won the last game to finish a sweep. He also salvaged the last game of the UC Davis series after the Dirtbags dropped the first two games.

In his two starts prior to that run, he went nine innings and allowed two runs, one earned, in a no-decision against Arizona State, and threw 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing six hits, in a nonconference game at Fullerton.

The Dirtbags are 12-2 on Sundays, too.

Mathews' best outings include seven inning-plus efforts against Pacific, UC Irvine and Long Beach back in their nonconference series, going 7 2/3 innings while allowing five hits and one unearned run in a 2-1 win.

"This is what it's all about, it all comes down to the last game," Buckley said.

"They understand what's at stake. It'll be fun."

PFT: Bears have doubts about Forte's knees

Indianapolis Colts MinicampGetty Images

If there was any doubt Andrew Luck would be the starting quarterback for the Colts in 2012, there shouldn?t be.

More accurately, there ain?t.

Even though he has missed Organized Team Activities due to the graduation schedule at Stanford, Luck will be installed as the No. 1 quarterback when he finally arrives for offseason workouts.? ?Ain?t no doubt,? offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said, via Mike Chappel of the Indianapolis Star.

It?s hardly a surprise, especially in light of the rest of the quarterbacks on the depth chart.? But it?s still interesting to see how different teams handle the question of whether to anoint a rookie quarterback as the starter before he has done anything to earn the position.? The Colts and Redskins have handed the starting job to Luck and Robert Griffin III, respectively.? Dolphins rookie Ryan Tannehill, the eighth overall pick, must unseat Matt Moore.? And Browns rookie Brandon Weeden, the 22nd selection, is part of a competition that very well may be slanted in his favor, but Weeden still hasn?t been handed the job.

Regardless of his status, Luck still has to pay his dues.? ?He?s got to go through the fires just like everybody else did,? linebacker Robert Mathis said.? ?But he?s our leader.? He?s the man, so let?s go.?

He?s now the man who is replacing the man named Peyton Manning.? And that adds to the potential pressure.

?Yes, he?s replacing Peyton Manning, but Manning is no longer part of this team,? defensive end Corey Redding said.? ?Peyton did great things, but now it?s Luck.? He has to come in and not even think about that.?? He has to come in and do great things for this team.? He can?t have [Manning] in the back of his mind.? This is the 2012 team.? We?re moving forward.?

Ain?t no doubt they are.? And ain?t no doubt it won?t be easy.? Manning was 3-13 as a rookie, even though he had Marshall Faulk and Marvin Harrison to help him.

Ain?t no one named Marshall Faulk or Marvin Harrison on the roster now.

2-minute expert: How to avoid blurry photos

8 hrs.

This holiday weekend, you may be traveling to see family, taking a scenic day trip or going to the neighbor's BBQ.

All are good photo opportunities ? whether with a "real" camera or a cellphone.?

Here are some tips to make the pictures better. Nothing too tricky: They assume you use the camera's auto setting or make minor adjustments.?[6 Tips to Use Instagram Like a Pro]

How do I make sure photos are in focus?

Often, something is in focus, but not the thing you wanted. Many modern point-and-shoot cameras and some cellphones have a face-detection mode that you can select to recognize multiple faces and optimize the focus (as well as exposure and color) for them.

If you don't have this mode, or you want to focus on something else, adjust the focus point to be more precise.?

Newer iPhones make this easy: Simply point on the screen to the part you want to be sharp.?

On other cameras, you can often change the default ? which makes a compromise so that everything is sort of sharp ? and instead chose a smaller focus point or area.?

To do this, you may have to take the camera out of auto mode and chose program mode, typically labeled "P" on the selector. [Expect to See Photo-Sharing in Ever-More Apps]

They still look blurry. What gives?

You may still get a blurry picture if you are in low light because the camera has to keep the shutter open for a relatively long time.?

The trick here is to minimize movement. If you are buying a new point-and-shoot, get one with optical image stabilizations (OIS), which moves either the lens or the image sensor to compensate for jitters.

With or without OIS, try holding the camera steadier. Make sure you have firm footing, and keep your arms close to your body when you shoot. If you can, hold the camera against something such as a pole or a tabletop. [What Makes a High-Quality Camera?]

News About Car: Automotive Addicts

In the perspective of a supercar, Renault attempts to brand their very own as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original Alpine A110. The new Renault Alpine Concept was influenced by the Renault DeZir concept and based off of the Megane Trophy (Renault Megane Coupe V6-powered mid-engine sports car).

The Alpine concept features a carbon fiber body, semi-circle LED lights mimicking the DeZir's fog lights, a roof-mounted air intake, 21-inch alloy wheels shod in Michelin tires and scissor doors.

Everything about the Alpine concept is sporty but somewhat reserved in terms of a true supercar due to its modest 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 400 horsepower and 311ft.lbs. of torque. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a limited slip differential and 6-speed sequential transmission.

Other aspects of the Alpine include large high-performance brakes, near 50/50 weight distribution, Sachs adjustable dampers and an integrated pneumatic jacking system for easy repair and servicing.

In my carnal mind I want to believe that this could be the predecessor to a new Nissan or Infiniti product here in the States due to the Renault-Nissan ties. We can only hope so.

A CONCEPT CAR TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF THE ALPINE A110

The Alpine Berlinette turns 50 this year and, to mark the event, Renault has created a concept car named Renault Alpine A110-50, dedicated to performance and driving enjoyment.
So what?s in a name? In some cases, the heritage of a name is like a national treasure ? and that?s certainly true for Alpine. Its DNA blends Renault?s sporting passion and technical expertise.

May 25, 2012
?Developing this concept car was a great adventure. It was a catalyst for creativity. We wanted to make a Berlinette that was of our time, and which boldly embodies Renault?s passion for motorsport. We were guided by our hearts and emotions.? Axel Breun, Concept and Show Car Director.

CHAPTER 1: The creation of the Renault Alpine A110-50 concept car
A new interpretation of a timeless design

To mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic Berlinette, Design Yann Jarsalle and Concept and Show Car Director Axel Breun reinterpreted the original design cues to include the new Renault design language introduced by Laurens van den Acker with the DEZIR concept car, and which will soon be rolled out in the company?s future models. The new front-end look, with the upright, confident diamond, has been adapted for this very low and wide car. The Renault Alpine A110- 50 is a car of today; a bold embodiment of RENAULT?s passion for motorsport.

?For everybody on the team, it was a dream come true to work on an Alpine concept car. We wanted to put this car firmly in the modern day, while resonating with its heritage? Laurens van den Acker, Senior VP, Corporate Design.

The Renault Alpine A110-50 concept car translates the most characteristic design features of the original A110 in a modern and spectacular way with:
- the sculpted forms of its elegant, flowing bodywork, enhanced by lights over which air seems to flow effortlessly.
- the half-domed additional lamps, with a technical but nostalgic interpretation, thanks to full LED yellow lighting ? as it should be!
- a characteristic 3D rear window, which reveals the mid-rear engine.
- air intakes on each side echo the ducts on the rear wheel arches of the Berlinette. The right-hand opening is for gearbox cooling, the left is for the engine bay.

Produced by Faster, the carbon-fibre bodywork features a new shade of blue which refreshes and reinterprets the famous original ?Alpine Blue?. Every opening panel does so with dynamics worthy of the finest GTs, with the bonnet hinged at the front and the engine bay cover opening towards the rear. The doors feature a scissor motion.

CHAPTER 2: the Renault Alpine A110-50 concept car ? Chassis and suspension
A true prototype
Produced with the renowned expertise of Renault Sport Technologies, the Renault Alpine A110- 50 is imbued with the world of motorsport. It benefits from the experience gained from the racing M?gane Trophy by using the same technical platform. Acclaimed by drivers in the WORLD SERIES by RENAULT, the tubular chassis of the Renault Alpine A110-50 has been stiffened and undergone several developments. The roll cage and bracing in the engine bay have been modified (lowered) in the workshop of Tork Engineering to adapt them to the vehicle?s height, which is lower than that of M?gane Trophy. The digital design work was led by Renault Design, Koller and Etud Integral, while final assembly was carried out by Protostyle.

The final weight distribution is almost ideal, with 47.8% over the front wheels.
To facilitate servicing, the concept car features integral pneumatic jacks. Derived directly from the systems seen in endurance racing, they allow the wheels to be changed extremely quickly.

An exceptional car that fuses elegance and aerodynamic efficiency
The efficiency of the Renault Alpine A110-50 concept car is largely generated by ground effect. At the front, a splitter hidden in the bumper generates low pressure, which results in significant aerodynamic downforce. At the rear, a diffuser accelerates air flow beneath the floor. Ground effect therefore accounts for more than one-third of the car?s downforce, with the rest coming from an adjustable rear wing.

The research and design of this air flow was conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics, a cutting-edge technology used particularly in F1. CFD involves studying movements of a fluid, or their effects, by resolving digitally the equations which govern the fluid. This technique was used by Renault Sport Technologies primarily in order to fine-tune the aerodynamics and study the behaviour of the New M?gane Trophy as a function of air flow.

Exemplary road holding
The wheelbase of the Renault Alpine A110-50 is identical to that of M?gane Trophy (2,625mm), while the track is slightly wider at 1,680mm front and 1,690mm rear.
The 21-inch wheels, with a single central nut, are specific to this car and fitted with road- homologated Michelin tyres.
The Sachs dampers can be adjusted in compression and extension, and are mounted directly onto the lower wishbones. There are numerous different set-up options: castor, camber and alignment, ride height, anti-roll.
In order to improve driver feedback, driving aids like ABS, traction control, etc. are not fitted.
Serious stopping power
The braking capability of the Renault Alpine A110-50 match its performance. At the front, large 356mm-diameter steel discs are slowed by six-piston callipers. At the rear, the discs are 330mm in diameter, while the callipers are four-piston models.

CHAPTER 3: the Renault Alpine A110-50 concept car ? Engine and gearbox
Mechanical excellence
Developed on the same technical platform as M?gane Trophy, the Renault Alpine A110-50 concept car also boasts the same chief technical characteristics.
It runs the Renault V4Y engine block, a 3.5 litre 24-valve 400hp V6 mounted in a mid-rear position. The crankcase (semi-wet), moving parts (pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft), valve train (camshafts and valve springs) and exhaust system are specific compared to the version featured on productions models.
Furthermore, the Renault Alpine A110-50 uses the carbon air intake employed for M?gane Trophy V6.

The inlet manifold is fed by a new roof-mounted air intake. This development broadens the engine?s power band, with additional horsepower at all engine speeds. The engine mapping has been optimised for these modifications.

F1-style transmission
The Renault Alpine A110-50 concept car is fitted with a semi-automatic six-speed sequential gearbox, as well as a twin-plate clutch that can be controlled using either the clutch pedal or a paddle on the steering wheel.

The gearbox is fitted longitudinally behind the engine and incorporates a limited-slip differential (discs and ramps) with adjustable pre-loading.
The cerametallic twin-plate clutch is also specific to the car. It is activated automatically when downshifting, guaranteeing fast and reliable gear changes.
A black box at the heart of Renault Alpine A110-50
Supplied by Magneti-Marelli, the Marvell 6R electronic control unit includes functions for engine management, gearbox control and data acquisition.
Even more accurate data acquisition

All data collected by the Renault Alpine A110-50 can be analysed using version 4 of the benchmark Wintax software. Wintax 4 enables advanced analysis of more than 50 parameters: engine speed, gear, steering angle, car speed, throttle position, brake pressure? This information allows drivers and engineers to optimise settings and driving style. Wintax 4 data analysis also enables even faster diagnosis of any technical problems.

?Developing this concept car was a great adventure. It was a catalyst for creativity. We wanted to make a Berlinette that was of our time, and which boldly embodies Renault?s passion for motorsport. We were guided by our hearts and emotions.? Axel Breun.

CHAPTER 4: Renault Alpine A110-50 ? The legacy of the Berlinette
1962 ? A star is born
When Jean R?d?l? unveiled the A110 Berlinette at the 1962 Paris Motor Show, it marked the start of an Alpine adventure for the engine from the Renault 8. The car had been developed from the Alpine A108, but was more stylish and more dynamic, with an even lower engine cover, a larger glazed area and the rear lights from the Renault 8. The new engine demanded changes to the air intakes: with the radiator mounted at the rear, cooling exits were opened in the resin bodywork behind the rear wheel arches, disguised with four chrome strips. The changes served only to heighten the elegance of the A110 Berlinette. The restrained, balanced silhouette maintained its extremely pure lines.

A car for the enthusiast
To drive a Berlinette is a life-changing experience. Above all, it was designed to win rallies, so it?s not surprising that it boasts a certain pedigree; not a tricky personality, but real character. You don?t climb aboard an Alpine, you slide into it. But once you?re behind the wheel, the connection is immediate. Agility and traction are particular strong points thanks to the mid-rear position engine, which tends to produce oversteer that is easy to control using the steering and throttle. It?s sometimes a little trickier to keep going in a straight line, but life?s all about compromise? This isn?t a car you simply take for a drive ? it demands to be properly driven. Its weaknesses are also its strengths.

CHAPTER 5: The Berlinette ? A look back at a glorious past in motorsport
The Berlinette in motorsport

The light weight and handling qualities of the Berlinette meant it was perfectly suited for motorsport. As well as being fun to drive, the cars were favourites with the fans, who often saw them cornering hard at lurid angles. It?s almost impossible to catalogue every motorsport triumph for the Berlinette, but these are the main stages of the adventure.

1961-1968: the early successes
Jos? Rosinski took the first win for the A110 at the 1963 Rallye des Lions. The remainder of the season followed this trend, with exploits including a win for Jacques Cheinisse on the Rallye d?Automne.

In the years that followed, a number of ?privateer? drivers achieved success at national and international level ahead of much more powerful cars from well-established brands.
- 1967: assembling a great team
Alpine became Alpine-Renault. New drivers joined the line-up: G?rard Larrousse, Jean-Claude Andruet and Jean-Pierre Nicolas in the works team, but also, among others, Bernard Darniche in the privateer ranks.

- 1968: the first French Rally Championship title
After victories on the Neige et Glace and Rallye de Lorraine for G?rard Larousse, Jean-Claude Andruet claimed the French title thanks to a total score of four wins during the season.

1969: Hitting its stride
Jean Vinatier and Jean-Claude Andruet were the stars of the season, with the former going on to become the French Rally Champion at the end of the year.

1970: European and French titles
The Berlinette 1600S was homologated for Group 4, which finally allowed the car to fight on almost equal terms with more powerful competitors. Jean-Claude Andruet, who had calmed his approach after several notable incidents, was crowned French and European Champion.

1971: The Berlinette dominates the Rallye Monte-Carlo
Another good year. Ove Andersson won the Rallye Monte-Carlo. Th?rier finished second and Andruet third. Andersson also took the win in Italy against the flotilla of Fiats and Lancias dispatched to beat him. He subsequently triumphed on the Austrian Alpine Rally and on the Acropolis, securing the international title for Alpine. Jean-Pierre Nicolas won the French Championship.

1972: Heading for glory
The 1,600cc engine was replaced by a more powerful 1,800cc unit. Jean-Claude Andruet dominated the Tour de Corse. Numerous wins followed, shared between the team?s drivers. Darniche was crowned French Champion at the end of the year, while Jean-Luc Th?rier claimed the Rallye des C?vennes driving a turbocharged 1,600cc version. This was the first stirrings of a technology destined for major success?

1973: The climax of an era
Just imagine the best French drivers of the era: Andruet, Darniche, Th?rier, Nicolas and Piot ably supported by the experienced Andersson. What?s more, a team of mechanics giving their heart and soul, plus a car at the peak of its development. The season began with victory for Andruet on the Rallye Monte-Carlo, followed home by four other Alpines. In Portugal, Th?rier and Nicolas scored a one-two. On the Rallye du Maroc, Darniche was unbeatable. And the rest of the season followed the same trend. Alpine won the inaugural World Rally Championship title and Jean-Luc Th?rier was crowned French Champion.

1974 ? 1975: the end of the works era
Nicolas won the Rallye du Maroc and finished second on the Tour de Corse. This was the Berlinette?s swansong, and the year produced the last major win for the A110 on the Crit?rium des C?vennes, driven by Jacques Henry.

The Facebook Phone Will Use Linux

This shouldn't come as a terrible surprise, but the Facebook Phone looks like it will be running atop Linux.

For many months now there's been speculations about the Facebook Phone that will inevitably come out of Facebook. It's not a matter of if but when. Speculations have been rampant about this mobile phone. Some have speculated that Facebook could be building its phone upon Windows Phone 7, but I've found out this weekend from a reliable source that it will be a Linux-based device. Though whether this is Android-based or just based upon an upstream Linux source with a custom UI layer atop, that isn't known to Phoronix at the moment.

It's nice to see Facebook continuing to embrace Linux and open-source even with their deep involvement with Microsoft and the Redmond company owning a stake of the social networking company. Other Facebook open-source/Linux initiatives include Flashcache for Linux, the HipHop compiler, the Open Compute Project, etc.

Exclusive: China leadership rules Bo case isolated, limits purge: sources

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Hu Jintao has demanded senior Communist Party officials stifle tensions over the ousting of ambitious politician Bo Xilai and show unity as they prepare for a change of leadership, sources briefed on recent meetings said.

Hu urged the party to close ranks at a meeting of about 200 officials early this month at a Beijing hotel, declaring the downfall of Bo - China's biggest political scandal in two decades - to be an "isolated case", the three sources said.

The sources' comments represent the first confirmation of speculation that Hu recently intervened to prevent a wider rift in the party and to resist pressure from some elements for a wider purge of the populist Bo's policies and supporters.

Bo, former party chief of Chongqing city, was suspended from the party's top ranks in April after his wife became a suspect in the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Before the scandal broke, Bo had been seen as a candidate to join China's new top leadership team to be unveiled this year.

"It's been settled that this will be dealt with as a criminal case, not a political case," said one of the sources, a retired official. "The central leadership wants to focus on ensuring a stable environment for the 18th Party Congress, so the guiding policy is to end all the rumors and contention."

The party congress, scheduled to be held late this year, will appoint a new generation of leaders. Hu and Premier Wen Jiabao will then step down from their government posts at the National People's Congress in early 2013, when Vice President Xi Jinping is likely to succeed Hu as president.

The sources, all with ties to senior party officials, spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid possible recriminations for speaking about internal party discussions.

Two of them said Hu had convened this month's meeting at the Jingxi Hotel, the party's heavily guarded conference hotel in western Beijing where leaders often hold secretive conclaves.

The meeting was part of a series of steps taken to shore up unity and advance preparations for the 18th Party Congress. Those steps included retired leaders, especially former president Jiang Zemin, giving their backing to Hu's position.

"Jiang said that if you have solid evidence that Gu Kailai committed murder and that Bo Xilai also committed major errors, then deal with it as an isolated criminal incident," said the retired official, paraphrasing a summary of Jiang's comments.

"There's already been too much instability. The overriding goal now must be a successful 18th Party Congress," the former official said, paraphrasing Jiang, 85, who a decade after he retired still exercises some influence over major decisions. One of the sources said Jiang was not at the Jingxi meeting and it was unclear where he made the remarks or how he conveyed them.

Hu's expected successor, Xi, also has stayed closely in line with the leadership's position on Bo, said the retired official.

IDEOLOGICAL RIFTS, RUMOURS

Describing Bo's downfall as a serious but isolated case of wrongdoing, Hu urged officials at the meeting to end ideological rifts and rumors ignited by the scandal, the sources added.

The domestic security chief, Zhou Yongkang, has faced accusations that he sought to protect Bo, but his career appears to have survived the controversy, despite rumors that Zhou could be sidelined.

"Zhou has been encouraged by the party leadership to make regular appearances and show he's trusted," said the retired official. He noted that Zhou and President Hu made a high-profile joint appearance before police on May 18.

Premier Wen had suggested he favored a wider reckoning in March when, a day before Bo was sacked as Chongqing party chief, the premier linked Bo's failings to the discredited radicalism of the Cultural Revolution.

But at the recent party meetings, Wen's comments were chided by some other officials, two of the sources said.

However, China's leaders could find enforcing demands for conformity from the public harder than from within the party.

Bo nurtured an ardent following among leftists who embraced what they viewed as his model of egalitarian growth, and they have continued to defend him as the victim of a plot. He had used Chongqing, a province-level municipality in southwest China, as a showcase for left-leaning populist policies.

Liberal reformers, however, want the government to look beyond Heywood's death and examine complaints about Bo's leadership, including accusations that his populist crackdown on organized crime in Chongqing involved abuses such as torture.

He was brought down after a furor erupted when his police chief, Wang Lijun, fled to a U.S. consulate for more than 24 hours in February and told American diplomats that he believed Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was implicated in Heywood's death in November, according to later descriptions of Wang's allegations.

"The leadership won't turn this into a line struggle," independent politics researcher Chen Ziming said, using the party's jargon for an ideological purge.

Beijing-based Chen, who has sources close to the party, said there appeared to have been heated internal debate over how to handle the Bo case before deciding to contain it.

"The drama is focused on the three actors, and that's already complicated enough," Chen said, referring to Bo, his wife Gu, and the ex-police chief Wang.

"If there are more actors brought into the drama, then it will become just too complicated and troublesome."

Bo, 62, and Gu, 52, have disappeared from public view and have had no chance to respond publicly to the allegations.

OUT OF SIGHT

The make-up of the next central leadership elite will be settled over coming months through an opaque process of inspections, jockeying and balancing rival camps in the party.

In recent weeks, the party has launched informal ballots and inspections to size up potential candidates for promotion into the Central Committee, which has about 200 full members, and the Politburo, a more powerful body with about two dozen members, the three sources said.

The Politburo Standing Committee, the core decision-making body, is chosen from the Politburo. The standing committee currently has nine members.

"Now they're going from province to province to examine officials and settle on possible candidates for the next leadership," said Chen, the researcher.

In China's top-down politics, final decisions rest with a handful of leaders, but the results of these assessments can sway deliberations, he said.

The informal polls would serve as a basis for discussions when the leaders head to summer villas in coastal Beidaihe in July or August, when the new succession lineup would be firmed up, said one of the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

LIfestyle Marketing for Rental Real Estate | The Rental Standard

rental lifestyle marketing

Renters don?t just look at the numbers and facts when they?re deciding on a new place to live. Their decisions are also based off of emotion ? after all, this is the place they?re going to call home for the next year or so. Are you appealing to this ?emotional? side of leasing?

Peters & Associates, a brokerage in Charlotte, NC, has been making waves in the real estate industry by taking a more creative spin towards property marketing. By using photography to make the luxury appeal of homes come across in their listings, their properties are more likely to resonate with the emotions of viewers.

It?s hard to make the unique-ness of your property shine through in a written listing. On top of stating the facts and features, use your description to help renters really visualize themselves living in your unit. For example, instead of photographing an empty living room, stage the room with comfy furniture, place models in it, or describe it with witty dialogue.

Another way to incorporate lifestyle marketing into your listing is to entice renters with the local community. If your property is by the water, try marketing the beach lifestyle. If the area has a great farmer?s market and is close to public transportation, market its healthy lifestyle and convenience. Instead of telling renters about the perks and amenities available, phrase it in a way so they can picture themselves using them.

With lifestyle marketing, you?re advertising your property as a place specific to a certain lifestyle, not just vacant housing. You?ll not only put a numerical value on your rental property, but you?re also adding lifestyle value.

Comcast rethinks bandwidth caps, trials two new policies that involve higher 300GB monthly limits

Comcast's bandwidth policy has come under fire from several directions lately, and today it's announced plans to test two new systems for managing capacity. In a company blog post, VP Cathy Avgiris describes the new "flexible" approaches it will be testing out in certain markets that start off by raising the limit to 300GB (from 250GB where it's been since 2008) per month. One of the plans involves offering 300GB as a base on its Essentials, Economy, and Performance internet packages, and higher limits on its Blast and Extreme tiers, with extra data available as an add-on, possibly $10 for 50GB or so. The other plan simply bumps all tiers to 300GB per month and offers the additional blocks of data as needed. For markets where it's not testing the new plans, it's suspending enforcement of the 250GB cap entirely for now, although it says it will still contact "excessive" users about their usage.

We're currently on a conference call concerning the changes and Comcast is reaffirming its belief that the FCC has decided it can "manage" data usage on its network, and that it will continue to do so in a "non-discriminatory" way. Particularly since the launch of its Xfinity TV Xbox 360 app others like Netflix and some consumer and networking watchdogs would beg to differ, it will be interesting to see if these approaches change anything. Executives on the call noted "noise" around the Xbox 360 app in making the change, but also pointed to an "ongoing internal discussion" and simply that times have changed from four years ago. The words that keep coming up so far are choice and flexibility, as well as mentioning that even today, very few customers approach the previous 250GB limit. In response to a question, Avgiris indicated the median usage for customers is still around 8-10GB per month. We'll find out more like where the test markets are later, for now hit the source link for all the information currently available.

Update: Netflix has responded to the move, and it's about what you'd expect. In other words, it appreciates the notion, but it's still mad.

Update 2: ArsTechnica got Comcast to open up about today's news, and while it's nothing too shocking, it's a good read.
