India: At Least 36 Dead In Stampede

Officials in India say at least 36 people have died in a stampede near a religious festival attended by millions of Hindus.

The stampede occurred?February 10?as thousands of pilgrims were at the train station in the northern town of Allahabad after attending the Kumbh Mela festival.

Reports said the stampede took place after part of a footbridge linking two of the rail platforms collapsed.

The incident came as an estimated 30 million devotees were expected to go into the waters at the Sangam, the confluence of three rivers -?the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati.

February 10?was one of the holiest bathing days of the Kumbh Mela, or Pitcher Festival -- a 55-day event that is one of the world's largest religious gatherings.
